The NDIS, explained in plain English

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can feel confusing. This page walks you through it, step by step, so you can focus on your goals instead of the paperwork.

The basics

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is how Australia funds support for people living with a permanent and significant disability. It is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

Instead of one-size-fits-all services, the NDIS gives you an individual plan with funding matched to your needs and goals. You choose who delivers your supports. That is where LinktCare comes in, connecting supports and building independence across Werribee, western Melbourne and Geelong.

NDIS access requirements

To access the NDIS, you generally need to meet these criteria.

Age. You are under 65 when you first apply to the scheme.
Residency. You are an Australian citizen, or hold a permanent or special category visa.
Disability. You have a permanent and significant disability that affects daily life.
Support needs. You need support now to live well and build skills for the future.

Managing your funding

The three ways to manage a plan

Every NDIS plan is managed in one of three ways. LinktCare supports plan-managed and self-managed participants.

1

Plan managed

A plan manager pays your invoices and tracks your budgets for you. You keep flexibility over providers without the admin. LinktCare supports plan-managed participants.

2

Self managed

You manage your own funding, pay providers directly and keep your own records. It is the most flexible option. LinktCare supports self-managed participants.

3

NDIA managed

The National Disability Insurance Agency pays registered providers on your behalf. LinktCare does not currently support NDIA-managed (agency-managed) participants.

To be upfront: LinktCare works with plan-managed and self-managed participants only, not NDIA-managed plans.
